Jay and Robin have lived in Elbow Lake (Grant County) for 45 years. They raised two daughters, Andrea and Jaime, who both graduated from West Central Area High School. Andrea graduated from Minnesota State University Moorhead, she lives in Las Vegas with her 2 children and teaches music. Jaime graduated from the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities, is married with two children, and is working in human resources in New York City.
After both graduating from Ada High School, Jay went on to graduate from UND-Ellendale while Robin earned her degree from NDSU. Teaching was their calling as they settled in Elbow Lake and taught in the area for their careers. Jay taught and coached in the school system for 36 years before retiring in 2007. He was honored to receive the Alexandria Area Wal-Mart 2006 Teacher of the Year award. Jay and Robin were both long time members of Education Minnesota.
Serving 20 years on the Elbow Lake Fire Department and more years as an EMT for Prairie Ridge Hospital helped fill any down time he may have had. Broadcasting WCA school sports the past 22 years for the local access channel was another way Jay was involved in serving his school community. After retiring from teaching Jay was elected Mayor of Elbow Lake and served one 4-year term when he was then elected to the MN House of Representatives in 2012. Jay has spent his whole adult life in public service.
